'Feel the Spirit'
This is the first concert to be given by Central Coast Philharmonia choir for this year. The main work is a collection of African spiritual songs arranged by John Rutter. It includes spirituals such as "Joshua fit the Battle", "Steal away"',"Ev'ry time I feel the spirit", ;"Deep river'"and the finale is the popular "When the saints go marching in". African-American spirituals comprise one of the world's greatest and best loved bodies of music and have spawned jazz and the blues. They have been an inspiration to many composers, one of which is the second feature composer Moses Hogan.
Moses Hogan who died in 2003, was an acclaimed African-American pianist, conductor and arranger of American spirituals. He is one of the most celebrated directors and masters of spirituals, creating dozens of original arrangements of classics spirituals and forming several choirs. The Philharmonia will be introducing three works of Moses Hogan to the Central Coast. These pieces have a very strong jazz flavour and although the orchestra is a Chamber Orchestra it also includes a drum kit.
The guest artist will be Jenny McCullough. Jenny was raised and educated on the Central Coast and in her younger days .
(see below for profile) The young voices of the girls from St. Joseph's Catholic College will also be participating in the Concert by joining in with the choir and in some performances of their own.
